Janet is leaving us in a very short time :-(, and she brought out some stash to sell and give away. It was the destash event of epic proportions! hehe!

Everyone behaved themselves and no squabbles broke out over the free yarn- well, no major squabbles, anyway. j/k ;-P

We all had fun knitting away, browsing the pretty yarns, books and needles, and the Crash Sock 102 workshop went well. I hope I was able to shed some light on toe-up socks!

(Manchelle is the one hiding in the fireplace. You're too sneaky Manchelle!)

Overall it was a lovely day (but then again it always is!). Janet hasn't moved yet, and we may get to see her one or two times more before she moves, so be sure to tell her how much you'll miss her if and when you see her!

Thank you Janet for so generously sharing your stash with us all! The Purls will all miss you terribly, but we wish you much luck and happiness in Seattle.

1. How did you hear about Charlotte Purls and when did you join?
I had seen the Charlotte Purls group on Ravelry for awhile, but Michelle finally convinced me to go to a meet up in January 2009 for the Charlotte Yarn field trip

2. How long have you been knitting/crocheting and who taught you?
I learned to knit in the summer of 2002 when my friend, Chris, taught me

3. What is your favorite item(s) you like to knit/crochet that you could never get enough of doing?
Hats - They're quick, a good variety and fun to wear

4. Is there one thing you really have no desire to knit/crochet?
I really don't like picking up stitches so I tend to ignore patterns with things like button bands

5. How often during the week do you knit/crochet and when do you normally fit in time?
I usually find time to knit at night and on weekends, usually an hour at a time. How much I do depends on how excited I am about the project I'm working on

6. What is your favorite project to date that you knitted/crocheted?
The Urban Aran Cardi for my husband - after a year of knitting socks, I thought a sweater would take forever, but it was satisfyingly quick and thrilling when it actually fit properly.

7. At this moment, what is your future dream project you would like to knit/crochet?
Right now the Hanami Stole is calling to me - I'm a sucker for a good back story

8. What one new knitting/crocheting thing do you want to learn in 2009?
I'd like to try to do some of my own designing and maybe pull out the drop spindle kit I bought a few years ago and never used

9. What are your "go to" knit/crochet book(s)?
The original Stitch n Bitch book still gets pulled out, but Vogue Knitting has all the answers

10. Other than knitting/crocheting are there any other hobbies or activities you enjoy doing?
I'm a crossword puzzle junkie, too involved in my neighborhood, some vegetable gardening, and a little dabbling in cheese making

11. Tell us, how would your close friends/family describe you?
Low-key, low maintenance but entirely too neurotic

12. If you could have a full day to spend with anyone (dead or alive) who would that be and why?
The author Tom Robbins just to listen to his stories (or maybe my grandmother since her stories are likely just as good!)

13. What one thing do you know for sure?
(with apologies to Op Ivy) "All I know is that I don't know nothing ... and that's fine"

14. What has our group (Charlotte Purls) changed about you?
I've learned the value of scheduling time just for me and what I enjoy

15. What do you enjoy most about Charlotte Purls?
It's a great, supportive group of people who completely understand the compulsion to knit and the lure of alpaca

Spring Shawl KCAL

We had our photo shoot for the Spring KCAL this last Saturday!

And we had a lovely afternoon of knitting and socializing! (We also saw some much-missed faces! :-) ) A couple of us also de-stashed a bit (notice the mob around the de-stash table??) hehe!

1. How did you hear about Charlotte Purls and when did you join?
Found it on the web when I first moved to Charlotte and was looking for some new friends.

2. How long have you been knitting/crocheting and who taught you?
It's been about 5 years or so but I only really started doing anything other than scarves about 2 years ago. I taught myself with the Stitch 'N Bitch book.

3. What is your favorite item(s) you like to knit/crochet that you could never get enough of doing?
Hmmm...I don't know that I have a favorite item. I really enjoy lace work though-in scarves and wraps, etc.

4. Is there one thing you really have no desire to knit/crochet?
I used to say socks...but I recently got some sock yarn that is really luxurious so I guess I would have to say I have no desire to make mens garments.

5. How often during the week do you knit/crochet and when do you normally fit in time?
Well I am finding I don't have as much time as I would like with my busy schedule lately but I try to fit some knitting in 3-5 times a week... If only I went to the gym as often ;-)

6. What is your favorite project to date that you knitted/crocheted?
I guess I'm proudest of my Pimlico Shrug in that it was a really difficult pattern for me at the time. I'm working on a Clapotis right now and I can tell I'm going to love it!

7. At this moment, what is your future dream project you would like to knit/crochet?
I really want to do the Owls sweater by Kate Davies and I'd like to try a skirt pattern: perhaps Intolerable Cruelty?

8. What one new knitting/crocheting thing do you want to learn in 2009?
Cables- I have yet to try them though I've watched a couple of videos

9. What are your "go to" knit/crochet book(s)?
Stitch N Bitch for help with patterns and The Knitter's Book of Yarn for yarn substitution advice

10. Other than knitting/crocheting are there any other hobbies or activities you enjoy doing?
I love to read and I have entirely too many tv shows that I follow

11. Tell us, how would your close friends/family describe you?
Goofy and extremely sarcastic and a bit random

12. If you could have a full day to spend with anyone (dead or alive) who would that be and why?
My dad or my cousin - they both passed away in 2006 and I feel like I didn't have enough time with either of them

13. What one thing do you know for sure?
We All Live In A Yellow Submarine

14. What has our group (Charlotte Purls) changed about you?
Well I really was lonely when I first moved to Charlotte and spent way too much time at home and now I have a group to hang out with!

15. What do you enjoy most about Charlotte Purls?
Just the fun of being together and learning from each other..... And the cookies from Bear Rock....can't forget about those.... And the lemon bars too!

CP "Get to Know a Purl": Donna

1. How did you hear about Charlotte Purls and when did you join?
I found and joined the Purls back in October '08 after searching on Ravelry for a knitting group in this area. I don't think I attended until November, though.

2. How long have you been knitting/crocheting and who taught you?
I think my mom taught me to knit back when I was about 10 yrs old, but I never got past the basics until this past fall. I don't remember how I learned to crochet; my mom doesn't do it, but I learned back around the same time, at about 10 yrs old. I've been crocheting ever since, so I guess that's almost 40 yrs. Now the internet is my primary teacher. Thank goodness for Youtube!

3. What is your favorite item(s) you like to knit/crochet that you could never get enough of doing?
Well, I'm addicted to Noro striped scarves right now, so I suppose that, but never say never. And there are lots of things that I haven't tried yet, so who knows? Next month it could be socks or hats or sweaters.

4. Is there one thing you really have no desire to knit/crochet?
Underwear or bathing suits?

5. How often during the week do you knit/crochet and when do you normally fit in time?
Pretty much every day, mostly in the afternoon and evening.

6. What is your favorite project to date that you knitted/crocheted?
I don't think I have a favorite. If I HAD to pick one...maybe my granddaughter's christening blanket.

7. At this moment, what is your future dream project you would like to knit/crochet?
Ha! Check my faves list on Ravelry. LOL I have all kinds of "dream projects." I don't think I could pick one if my life depended on it.

8. What one new knitting/crocheting thing do you want to learn in 2009?
I think what I really want to learn this year, more than anything, is how to fix mistakes without frogging. But you only asked about knitting and crocheting. I do want to learn to spin and weave, too.

9. What are your "go to" knit/crochet book(s)?
I know others have said this before me, but I have to say it has been that good ole Reader's Digest Complete Guide to Needlework. I've had it for ages and it is very helpful. It is not, however, exhaustive, by any means, so I think it will soon be replaced by some other one that is more encyclopedic. I haven't found that book yet, though.

10. Other than knitting/crocheting are there any other hobbies or activities you enjoy doing?
Well, as I said, I want to learn to spin and weave, but as for something I already do...hmmm...I'm so fickle. I change all the time. Right now I'm really just knitting and crocheting, but last year I was selling jewelry, before that it was latin/ballroom dancing, before that it was wine tasting, painting, playing my guitar, interior decorating/faux finishes, gardening, and the list goes on. I'm a bit ADD when it comes to hobbies/activities.

11. Tell us, how would your close friends/family describe you?
Hmmm...let me ask my husband. He says: outgoing, intelligent, creative, quick-thinking (like a lawyer), adventurous.

12. If you could have a full day to spend with anyone (dead or alive) who would that be and why?
That's a tough one. If we just consider Jesus a given and move on to the next person on the list, I would say my daughter, Larissa. I miss her horribly.

13. What one thing do you know for sure?
That God is in control; therefore, I don't have to freak out.

14. What has our group (Charlotte Purls) changed about you?
I don't think I've changed, really, unless you consider the addition of a great new social circle "change."

15. What do you enjoy most about Charlotte Purls? I love the girl time and that it's such a varied and interesting group. Everyone is loving and accepting of each other and most of all ENABLING when it comes to the yarn! I also love the sharing of knowledge. I know that's not "one" thing, but this is such a great group; I couldn't say just one thing.

1. How did you hear about Charlotte Purls and when did you join?
I heard about the Purls from both Randal Carter and Stacey...Stacey invited me to come when we had the WWKIP day at Freedom Park, April? of '08 and Randal had mentioned it to me over coffee one morning some time before that...it took Stacey's spirit to give me the push to overcome my "I don't know anyone there" issues and actually show up for a Saturday at Bear Rock Cafe...and the rest is history

2. How long have you been knitting/crocheting and who taught you?
I learned to knit when I was in seventh grade and we had to join an activity club in our "free period"...that's 50 years ago!!! My Mom was a knitter and my Grandmother crocheted so they both kept me going along the fiber path until I left home.

3. What is your favorite item(s) you like to knit/crochet that you could never get enough of doing?
hmmm...good question, there isn't much I haven't tried over the years, but the most recent obsession has been trying the different socks from Cat Bhordi's newest book, New Pathways...and I started a new pair just this afternoon. And I'm excited about doing our new KAL, a lace shawl!

4. Is there one thing you really have no desire to knit/crochet?
don't ask me why, but sideways knit sweaters have no appeal to me at all...and neither do the really ornate intarsia designs...too busy.

5. How often during the week do you knit/crochet and when do you normally fit in time?
I knit just about daily and when the weather is not fit for gardening and I can get away with it, I'll ignore the dishes and laundry so I can sit and knit until my butt falls off while I watch all-day marathons of NCIS, Monk, CSI, Burn Notice...like today!!!

6. What is your favorite project to date that you knitted/crocheted?
That would have to be the socks I knit in Noro's Kureyon Sockyarn as a shop model for Cindy Amann at the Peace of Yarn. She gave me a skein of Kureyon sock yarn of my choosing in return...I love that yarn!!!

7. At this moment, what is your future dream project you would like to knit/crochet?
The Charlotte's Web shawl from A Painter's Palette...after seeing the one Christy made I just have to do it too!!! I'm going to use two skeins of the Kureyon sock yarn instead of the K....however you spell it/pronounce it, which is way too expensive for my budget.

8. What one new knitting/crocheting thing do you want to learn in 2009?
Each of the sock methods in Cat Bhordi's book...and be able to do them without having to follow the book, flipping pages, trying to remember how to execute each of her totally cool new way of doing things.

9. What are your "go to" knit/crochet book(s)?
I couldn't even begin to say. I have so many books, more than my knitting bookcase can hold...and it depends on what I'm hooked on at the moment. Cat Bhordi's book is with me all the time right now, but that's just because I'm doing socks again. Quite often I'll have an issue of Interweave Knits with me because they inspire me to try new patterns...or give me the basic pattern for something I'm making several versions of, like the Subway Mittens.

10. Other than knitting/crocheting are there any other hobbies or activities you enjoy doing?
I'm known as the Gardening Queen, the Mulch Lady, Plant Lady...both at our school, Carolina International School (a public charter school out in Harrisburg) and at UNC-Charlotte where I work in the Susie Harwood Botanical Garden. And I wonder why my house is always a disaster zone in the spring, summer and fall...if the weather is good the house is not where I am.

11. Tell us, how would your close friends/family describe you?
My son says I have my own unique approach to the world and that it sure shows up in my knitting...I am well-loved by my family and friends and they treasure my funky approach to living...so I'd guess they'd describe me as a very funky and unique person who never fails to surprise them with new ideas.

12. If you could have a full day to spend with anyone (dead or alive) who would that be and why?
Jimmy Carter...he inspires me to be all that I can be, to be try to always be kind, loving and caring, as well as strong in my beliefs.

13. What one thing do you know for sure?
That the sun will come up in the morning somewhere, even if I can't see it, and that life is good.

14. What has our group (Charlotte Purls) changed about you?
You all have brought the joy of knitting as part of a group back into my life, given me the courage to believe that not all in the world of knitting is emptiness, that there are other knitters out here who share my gleeful approach to the unending use of fiber in its many forms. You've also helped me create a new and larger circle of friends and when I have to miss a Saturday with you'all it really ticks me off! And that's okay too...just makes me more eager to be there the next time....YOU ALL ROCK!!!!

15. What do you enjoy most about Charlotte Purls?
All of the wild, wonderful, funny, caring knitters and crocheters who show up at the Rock...each and everyone of you are special in your very own way, worth knowing and spending time with...yeah, I can get smaltzy at times too...so deal.

Saturday Knitting

We had lots of folks out this Saturday, along with several new faces!

It was lovely meeting Kim, Sarah, Helen and Helen's daughter Grace. We hope you all join us again soon!

Lots of knitting and chatting was done, and sharing/admiring of FO's and WIP's. Lisa finished her Intarsia blanket - isn't it adorable!! (And I wish I had gotten a picture of Cristi's shawl - it was gorgeous!!)

LYS Field Trip to Charlotte Yarn

1. How did you hear about Charlotte Purls and when did you join?
My sister found the group on ravelry before I was a member.

2. How long have you been knitting/crocheting and who taught you?
I have been knitting for almost 4 years and I began by taking a knitting class at JoAnn's.

3. What is your favorite item(s) you like to knit/crochet that you could never get enough of doing?
I love making hats because they are so quick and absoultely cute. I love the instant gratification!

4. Is there one thing you really have no desire to knit/crochet?
SOCKS!

5. How often during the week do you knit/crochet and when do you normally fit in time?
I probably knit 4 to 5 days a week usually at night when I am watching tv. However, my new favorite thing is to listen to an audiobook while knitting.

6. What is your favorite project to date that you knitted/crocheted?
Angora baby booties...They are absolutely adorable.

7. At this moment, what is your future dream project you would like to knit/crochet?
Hmm... This is hard because I have been trying a lot of my dream projects. I would say a lace blanket maybe the Hemlock since I have been meaning to start it since the KAL.

8. What one new knitting/crocheting thing do you want to learn in 2009?
To read a chart... still working on it.

9. What are your "go to" knit/crochet book(s)?
The Stitch n' Bitch books

10. Other than knitting/crocheting are there any other hobbies or activities you enjoy doing?
I love to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, reading, and traveling.

11. Tell us, how would your close friends/family describe you?
Absolutely fabulous!!! Hahaha. Scarcastic and sweet.

12. If you could have a full day to spend with anyone (dead or alive) who would that be and why?
My grandmother who died when I was in third grade. I have been thinking about her a lot lately for some reason.

I don't know it all and that's okay.

I have expanded my range of projects and I am trying more difficult patterns because of projects that everyone else knits.

I love the people.

1. How did you hear about Charlotte Purls and when did you join? I was googling charity knitting when I came across the charlottepurls blog. I could not believe the meetings were 5 minutes from my house. I 'd been looking for a local knitting group for months!

2. How long have you been knitting/crocheting and who taught you? I've been knitting for almost a year (in November) and I've been crocheting off and on for about 4 years (I'm still a novice though).

3. What is your favorite item(s) you like to knit/crochet that you could never get enough of doing? I absolutely love scarves. They are so versatile and fun to make. Sometimes they take me a while though because I like them really long.

4. Is there one thing you really have no desire to knit/crochet? I don't see myself ever knitting or crocheting a tea cozy. They're cute in a way but they're not me.

5. How often during the week do you knit/crochet and when do you normally fit in time? I normally try to knit every night while watching t.v or a movie. But since I've been in school, I've barely had time to do anything but study...boo hoo.

6. What is your favorite project to date that you knitted/crocheted? Hmm..last year I worked on some armwarmers for my daughter. I knitted the body of them and then added some crochet fun fur to the top. They were so cute and she loves them.

7. At this moment, what is your future dream project you would like to knit/crochet? I think I'm ready to crack down and work on a sweater. I've been eyeing the central park hoodie for a while now. We'll see...

8. What one new knitting/crocheting thing do you want to learn in 2008? I really would like to get into knitting socks, they seem fun and quick, I just haven't taken the time to really work on them. That's my goal..socks for the new year!

9. What are your "go to" knit/crochet book(s)? For Christmas last year I got the Reader's Digest Book of Knit/Crochet Stitches. I love, love that book. You can come up with countless possibilities for any project.

10. Other than knitting/crocheting are there any other hobbies or activities you enjoy doing? I really like jewelry making. I've made a few pairs of earrings but I would love to learn to do necklaces and bracelets as well.

11. Tell us, how would your close friends/family describe you? I think they would say I'm a nice person and a good mom.

12. If you could have a full day to spend with anyone (dead or alive) who would that be and why? I would have to say my great grandmother Sarah. I would love to learn more about my family history as far back as I could.

13. What one thing do you know for sure? I know a couple of things for sure...where there is a will, there is a way and everything happens for a reason.

14. What has our group (Charlotte Purls) changed about you? I don't feel I've changed much, maybe more obsessed with knitting...if that's possible, but I would say that it has enriched my life outside of work and home.

15. What do you enjoy most about Charlotte Purls? I enjoy meeting up with a great bunch of women sharing in the enjoyment of the crafts we love. There is so much support and fellowship in the group. I always look forward to seeing everyone and sharing projects and ideas.

1. How did you hear about Charlotte Purls and when did you join?
Ravelry… what a beautiful thing. I started to attend the purls meetings in the early spring of this year.

2. How long have you been knitting/crocheting and who taught you?
My Nana tried to teach me when I was nine or ten but my tension was so tight we couldn’t get my ‘knitting’ off the aluminum needles. I took a class approximately 4 years ago and have been knitting away since then.

3. What is your favorite item(s) you like to knit/crochet that you could never get enough of doing?
I loved knitting my clapotis and know that I will be knitting more of these.

4. Is there one thing you really have no desire to knit/crochet?
My older brother requested an item I will never knit. I am not going to share what it is here but I will at a meeting.

5. How often during the week do you knit/crochet and when do you normally fit in time?
I try to knit on a nightly basis as it is my relaxation. I would say I knit 4-5 hours a week.

6. What is your favorite project to date that you knitted/crocheted?
My felted market bag is my favorite project to date. I felt so proud of myself when I completed it and still love carrying it.

7. At this moment, what is your future dream project you would like to knit/crochet?
Oh wow… just one?? I think the Charlotte ’s web shawl without the fringe. Shhhhh… lace still scares me a bit.

8. What one new knitting/crocheting thing do you want to learn in 2008?
Provisional cast on and a new sock heel.

New techniques don’t intimidate me and I know that there is always someone there to help out.

Where else could a group of women and men come together with not many more communalities then knitting or crocheting and enjoy each others company and form life long friendships?

I was in a small crochet group that met at Northlake Mall and one day in February a member of Charlotte Purls was in the store and invited us to join the Charlotte Purls. The first time I joined the Charlotte Purls was at the Cottage Yarn in March 2008

My grandmother taught me to crochet during the summer of 1970

5. How often during the week do you knit/crochet and when do you normally fit in time?
Believe it or not, I crochet almost everyday on the way to work. I get in a few stitches at every stop light. I also average about three evenings a week after dinner

Given a chance I would like to spend the day with my younger self. I would stress the need to be more aggressive in going for the things I want in life, rather than just going with the flow all the time.

13. What one thing do you know for sure?
That no matter what happens in my life God will be there, even when I don't acknowledge His presents.

14. What has our group (Charlotte Purls) changed about you?
Joining Charlotte Purls has gotten me out of the house and more involved with other people outside me family sphere.

The opportunity to share and show off my finished projects and to see what others are doing in the fiber arts

Purls' Touch of Charity!

As the summer is quickly closing in on us! Just wanted to give an update on our last KAL.

Our Summer Charity KAL was a HUGE success!! :o)

For the months of June, July and August the Purls were knitting and crocheting up washcloths focusing on pregnant women & teenagers, as well as women victim to domestic violence.

Our last donation we had 68 washcloths collectively for the months of July & August donating to the Cabarrus Victims Assistance Network (CVAN).

WHOOOOOA!!!!

CVAN offers services for battered women, their children and rape survivors.
Including a 24-hour crisis line, support groups for battered women, shelter with a fee of $1 per day or 1 hour work for common good per day, and much much more!

We had a GRAND TOTAL for the entire summer (all 3 months) of 109 washcloths donated to both Florence Crittenton Services and Cabarrus Victims Assistance NetworkAlong with TONS of health and beauty aid (HBA) products donated by the Charlotte Purls!!

You all really came thru on this charity project!!

I posted this comment on my Funkyknitter46 blogspot (gotta get rid of the other one...the one without the 46) and thought I was posting it here...like I said, I'm new to this stuff.

anyway, the long and short of it is that I've sorted and organized most of my knitting library, a long, fun and exhausting chore that I'm glad to have done. In the process I discovered that I have books I bought on a whim (imagine that), but that I'm not likely to ever use (dbl imagine that). In addition I discovered that I have duplicate copies of several others...wonder how that happened. Books like The Knit Experience (2 copies) and an extra EZ Knitting Without Tears!!

I'll be posting books for sale on Ravelry soon, but wanted to let my local cohorts in knitting & crocheting crime (I mean addiction, no, passion...hmmmm) have first shot...saves on shipping/mailing costs. 1. How did you hear about Charlotte Purls and when did you join?

Back in December, or around there, Doreen and I were looking for a closer group and her sister Janet suggested we come along to a meeting with her. We made it in January and I never looked back! I am so glad we came that Tuesday night.

2. How long have you been knitting/crocheting and who taught you?

I taught myself to knit 3 years ago, then took 2 and a half off from knitting when I started the project from hell. When I met Doreen, she resparked my interest! I think I really am hooked this time. My Grandmother taught me to crochet when I was a young child, maybe 6 or 8, but never did anything with it, never even a project or rectangle. I just started again this year, more as a complement to my knitting than for full projects... for now that is. Who knows, the next meeting I might be doing just that.

3. What is your favorite item(s) you like to knit/crochet that you could never get enough of doing?

Hum, that's a hard one. Usually after I make something once I tend to move on to something else. I really enjoy new challenges.

4. Is there one thing you really have no desire to knit/crochet?

It keeps changing, but most likely to stick around would be cobweb lace. I just can't handle something that small. However, the sock bug has not caught up with me yet. I don't know that it will. I plan on making my first pair this summer when the mmmSock makes it appearance, but don't expect tons more mainly because I do not wear socks often, even in the winter! I absolutely reserve the right to change my mind completely on both of these at any given whim.

5. How often during the week do you knit/crochet and when do you normally fit in time?

Sometimes it is Tuesday nights only. Other times as soon as the kids are down for the night the needles come out. Occasionally, on a stressful day, I knit standing at the kitchen counter so I can't be climbed on. Not quite as relaxing, but it works well enough.

6. What is your favorite project to date that you knitted/crocheted?

That is a tough one. Honestly, my tiny iPod cozy might be the winner for favorite FO. Favorite knit was a tie between the Crazy Cool Scarf and the Monkey Girl Hat.

7. At this moment, what is your future dream project you would like to knit/crochet?

Right now the Clementine Shawlette, Flutter Scarf, and Sullivan Street Bolero are all calling to me. Who knows when or if they will get done though between all of the dishcloths and other things I have taken on. I'm starting to understand why everyone says knitters are so charitable and never knit for themselves. Peer Pressure by the unassuming name of 'KAL'.

8. What one new knitting/crocheting thing do you want to learn in 2008?

Maybe intarsia or double knitting. More crochet stitches.

9. What are your "go to" knit/crochet book(s)?

I learned from Stitch'n'Bitch, but go to the knittinghelp.com videos or youtube anytime I want to see something now. I love eye candy stitch encyclopedias. :)

10. Other than knitting/crocheting are there any other hobbies or activities you enjoy doing?

I make beaded jewelry and sew baby carriers and slings for sale. Other than that, I am a full time stay at home(schooling) mom, and everything is done when two kids are tugging on me.

11. Tell us, how would your close friends/family describe you?

Um, I sure hope 'kind, faithful, loving, understanding and friendly'... but one never knows. I think they would say creative and smart. Also, I am a bit off the mainstream track. I'm what you call 'crunchy'.

12. If you could have a full day to spend with anyone (dead or alive) who would that be and why?

My Grandfather Kell. I only met him twice before he died. I never got to really get to know him well.

13. What one thing do you know for sure?

Pick your answer... That I am one of God's children and that I am 'saved'. That the Earth is round. My knitting style is not the norm. I have only 2 kids. My nose is attached to my face. ;)

14. What has our group (Charlotte Purls) changed about you?

Um.... I don't know that it has. But I reserve the right to be wrong about that one.

15. What do you enjoy most about Charlotte Purls?

The community feeling. The way we help each other and come together with a common interest. I really *love* that.

Our Summer Charity KAL kicked-off with a BANG!! :o)

For the months of June, July and August the Purls are knitting and crocheting up washcloths focusing on women victim to domestic violence, as well as pregnant women & teenagers, and homeless shelters.

We had 41 washcloths for June

and a TON of health and beauty aid (HBA) products donated by the Charlotte Purls!!

June's donations went to Florence Crittenton Services!

This site is a residential home for single woman and adolescents that have nowhere else to go while they are pregnant, and typically do not have many personal items while still trying to prepare for a new life to be born soon.

THANK YOU to all the Purls who gave back to the community with your time and treasure!

There is still more time to keep giving! We will be knitting/crocheting up washcloths and collecting HBA products in July & August!!

1. How did you hear about Charlotte Purls and when did you join?
I heard about the Purls through Ravelry! I started coming to meetings in January 2008.

2. How long have you been knitting/crocheting and who taught you?
I've been crocheting since I was about 12 - my mom and grandma taught me. I learned to knit about 5 years ago- I took a class at Needles in Concord for a few weeks. It was much easier to learn than it looked!

3. What is your favorite item(s) you like to knit/crochet that you could never get enough of doing?
I love, love, love knitting socks! I have so much sock yarn now that I should be set for months and months (but that still doesn't stop me from buying more if I see a color I like! Sock yarn doesn't count as stash, right?!)

4. Is there one thing you really have no desire to knit/crochet?
I don't know - I think I'd try anything - although I don't see much need for toilet paper roll covers. ;-)

5. How often during the week do you knit/crochet and when do you normally fit in time?
I knit every day. I usually knit in the evenings after the kids have gone to bed, but sometimes I can work in some knitting time during the day, too.

6. What is your favorite project to date that you knitted/crocheted?
I think my favorite project that I've done so far is the beaded wedding purse that I made for my brother's wife as a wedding day gift. It took me forever to knit (on 0000 needles!), and used over 50,000 beads! (Now I kinda wish I had kept it for myself, but that's a long and upsetting story!)

7. At this moment, what is your future dream project you would like to knit/crochet?
I would love to knit the Autumn Rose pullover by Eunny Jang. I just have to work up the nerve to attempt it (and find the right yarns, and find the time...)

8. What one new knitting/crocheting thing do you want to learn in 2008?
I want to learn to knit backwards - I've given it a try, but I need more practice, since it takes me 10 times as long to knit backwards as it does to just turn my work and knit normally. In 2008 so far I've already learned entrelac, and magic loop, and toe-up socks!

9. What are your "go to" knit/crochet book(s)?
Well, I have several (I'm amassing quite a knitting library for my progress through the Master Knitter program), but two that I go to often are The Knitter's Companion from Interweave Press and The Knitter's Handbook from Knitter's Magazine/XRX.

10. Other than knitting/crocheting are there any other hobbies or activities you enjoy doing?
I'm an avid reader - I particularly love sci-fi and fantasy novels, but I read a wide range of genres. I've been cross-stitching since I was 15 - and my knitting stash has only just recently surpassed my cross-stitch stash, which was quite a feat! I hope to pick cross-stitch back up once there's no risk of the boys monkeying with the tiny needles, but I'm afraid knitting might be too addicting for that to happen anytime soon! I love camping and hiking too - we have a pop-up camper and we try to go camping as often as we can from Spring to late Fall. I like doing digital scrapbooking, as well, although I hardly ever get a chance to work on it, what with all the knitting to be done!

11. Tell us, how would your close friends/family describe you?
Hmm. I don't know... I guess they'd say I'm a shy and reserved gal, but once I get to know people I open up. Sometimes I'm a perfectionist (but that's diminished some since I had kids! Because, let's face it, a clean house and happy kids do not co-exist!). They'd say I'm an optimist, too. :-)

12. If you could have a full day to spend with anyone (dead or alive) who would that be and why?
Gee, that's a tough one. I'd really like to meet and spend a day with the Dalai Lama. He's a very inspiring individual - I think, deep down, I'm a Buddhist.

13. What one thing do you know for sure?
I know that life is only as good as you make it. And I know that soul-mates do exist. (Wait... that's two things, oh, drat!)

14. What has our group (Charlotte Purls) changed about you?
I wouldn't say I've changed, per-se, but I enjoy knitting much more - it's so much more enjoyable when you have someone to share the experience with (and although hubby loves me and tries to understand, sometimes he just doesn't get it, ya know?). Plus, the Purls are a wonderful group of people, and I could see myself developing some meaningful friendships within this group (and it's so tough to make new friends being a shy, reserved, stay-at-home mom!)

15. What do you enjoy most about Charlotte Purls?
Seeing what everyone else is working on, seeing and touching new yarns, the support and encouragement of fellow knitters, the great conversations, the wonderful people!

1. How did you hear about Charlotte Purls and when did you join?

I first learned about the Purls from my sister Janet in the fall of 2007. I first attended in January 2008 with Zuri, my daughter, and we have pretty much come ever since.

2. How long have you been knitting/crocheting and who taught you?
My mother taught me how to crochet when I was around 7 along with many other crafty persuits in the mid 70's. I dabbled at trying to learn how to knit on and off but didn't really get the hang of it until 2003 when I madly wanted to knit diaper soakers for my 2nd son Mardie. I got a few books, The Knit Stitch by Sally Melleville, and S-N-B as well as met and sat with Yvonne at AC Moore a few times. I miraculously got it and was off. . . knitting twisted stitches that is. After about a year of twisted projects Janet informed me of my error. I denyed it. But the truth was that I was knitting twisted stitches. It just took me my current project at the time to correct it. Now I can easily switch back and forth depending on what my pattern calls for.

3. What is your favorite item(s) you like to knit/crochet that you could never get enough of doing?

I really love to knit medium sized projects with endless stockinette. I know that sounds kind of simplistic, but it's mindless and rhythmic and feels good. So I guess socks and sweaters.

4. Is there one thing you really have no desire to knit/crochet?

Well I thought it was lace, but I'm working on a Nursing Shawl and the Hemlock Ring and they are not too bad. . . so right now I really can't say there's anything other than maybe tights for me in sock weight yarn. But once I got underway I could even see that being a rewarding project. I would love to wear hand knit tights. off to find a pattern to queue into Ravelry.

5. How often during the week do you knit/crochet and when do you normally fit in time?

I would love to say that I knit daily, but that's not possible in my current lifestyle/situation. I try to knit 2 times a week at minimum, Tuesday nights and Thursday nights. I keep a portable project close and try to have that around when running errands but my preschool aged kids still need a lot of "me" when we are running errands so not watching them in order to knit is asking for something bad to happen.

6. What is your favorite project to date that you knitted/crocheted?

I love all of my socks. I use them the most, love wearing them, and enjoyed knitting them.

7. At this moment, what is your future dream project you would like to knit/crochet?

I have visions of some cute outfits and toys for Zuri. I want to make a patchwork blanket with sock yarn like koigu, but am not sure I want to do the mitered squares. I like tesselating patterns so I'm leaning towards fish, but honestly I haven't decided.

8. What one new knitting/crocheting thing do you want to learn in 2008?

I just got my 2nd knitting machine. I sold the first one when I was frustrated that I couldn't keep it out with the kids. Since that time a craft room has fixed that problem. I want to learn how to better use it and make a few projects on it. I also want to learn how to prepare fiber, expand my dying skills and spin it into pretty yarn. I got a wheel and just the little spinning I have done has been incredibly fun and rewarding. I also want to complete my lace projects and do at least 2 projects with colorwork of some sort.

9. What are your "go to" knit/crochet book(s)?

Well I love books of all kinds so that love would naturaly spill over to knitting. My go to books for instruction are Sally Melleville's series, and Super Stitches Knitting. Most of my books are lovely to look at though so I often just pour through them for ideas on color, design elements, style, etc.

10. Other than knitting/crocheting are there any other hobbies or activities you enjoy doing?

I guess I can say spinning though I consider it to be related. I'm a bit of a gadget freak so I love unique tools and implements.

Purls has made knitting more social for me. I have a small group of crafty friends but all of us don't share knitting. I think I love to knit the most of all of my crafty persuits. It's nice to share that commonality with friends.

You guys are a wonderful bunch. I always feel welcome, helped, enriched, smiled upon, and loved when I come. I appreciate the lack of drama that often permeates groups of people. Purls is a group that is posative in action and in word. I'm proud to be one.

I do recommend you consider if you want to use the knitted cast-off or a much simpler and faster crochet loop cast off. The version in the pattern takes a while!

1. How did you hear about Charlotte Purls and when did you join?
I first heard about Charlotte Purls from Connie. I met her at the Mint Hill Library and she shared with me about all the fun she was having. I started comingto the meetings on October of 2007.

2. How long have you been knitting/crocheting and who taught you?
The first time I came in contact with knitting needles was around the age of 18 while I was living in Buenos Aires, Argentina. A girl whom I met in an InteriorDecorating class taught me. Back then I remember I only completed one project (a sweater with cables). That was a long time ago...wow more than 30 years ago. Then around 5 years ago, I can't remember the exact date the Branch Manager at thelibrary I worked made knitted dishcloths for all my co-workers. I decided I wanted make some myself and so I began to knit again. As far as crochet, I have taught myself from books. I would say I have been crocheting for about 2 years.

3. What is your favorite item(s) you like to knit/crochet that you could never get enough of doing?
I love to knit baby booties, scarves and baby sweaters. I have recently fallen inlove with crochet amigurumis. Amigurumi is the japanese word for small stuffed crochettoy.

4. Is there one thing you really have no desire to knit/crochet?
I would like to crochet or knit just about everything for the learning experience,but I had a bad experience knitting a baby sweater with a shawl collar. I avoid projectsthat have them.

5. How often during the week do you knit/crochet and when do you normally fit in time?
I knit or crochet at work during my two breaks and after I eat lunch (about 30 minutes). I also knit when I come back from work while I watch my spanish soaps. I knit pretty much every day.

6. What is your favorite project to date that you knitted/crocheted?
I have thoroughly enjoyed crocheting my amigurumis because of how quick they havebeen completed.

7. At this moment, what is your future dream project you would like to knit/crochet?
I am currently working on a crochet tablecloth featured in the book Vintage Crochet bySusan Cropper and I can't wait to put it together.

8. What one new knitting/crocheting thing do you want to learn in 2008?
I would love to be able to make the "Betty" Shrug also featured in Vintage Crochet.

9. What are your "go to" knit/crochet book(s)?
I have found very helpful The Crochet Answer Book by Edie Eckman. For knitting I likethe Knitter's Book of Finishing Techniques by Nancie M. Wiseman and the Big Book of Knitting by Katharina Buss.

10. Other than knitting/crocheting are there any other hobbies or activities you enjoy doing?
I like to make hand stamped greeting cards, baking, gardening and photography.I also enjoy very much playing with my two grandchildren Caleb and Taite.

11. Tell us, how would your close friends/family describe you?
I'm not sure how to answer this one but I think they see me as someone calm, quiet, interested in spiritual matters.

12. If you could have a full day to spend with anyone (dead or alive) who would that be and why?
I would love to be able to spend time more time with any member of my family who is away from me right now. All my family lives in Panama City in Panama. I also longto be reunited soon with my son who is in the service living in Aviano, Italy.

13. What one thing do you know for sure?
I know for sure that God is in control of my life and He alone gives me the strengthto face every day. I'm blessed that the Lord is in my life to lead and protect.

14. What has our group (Charlotte Purls) changed about you?
I don't think the Purls group has changed me in any way.

15. What do you enjoy most about Charlotte Purls?
I like meeting new people who share my love for knitting and crochet. When I am stuck with a pattern I know I can count on someone to help me.

1. How did you hear about Charlotte Purls and when did you join?
I heard about the Charlotte Purls from Stacey over at Knittinghelp.com. I'm not sure when I first heard of them.
I do remember checking out her blog and book marking it and then secretly 'stalking' her.
But it wasn't until I was on Ravelry that I finally made the leap to check out the group. I believe it was just before Thanksgiving of 2007.

2. How long have you been knitting/crocheting and who taught you?
I've been knitting for 2.5 yrs. My husband, Steven, taught me to knit. he he I couldn't for the life of me get the cast on right. So I had him learn (via knittinghelp.com) and then teach me.
Sadly he hasn't picked up the needles in months. He has made some hats and scarves.

3. What is your favorite item(s) you like to knit/crochet that you could never get enough of doing?
Right now my 'passion' is socks. After that first pair I am hooked. I have bought so much sock yarn it's not funny.

4. Is there one thing you really have no desire to knit/crochet?
Lace. I really have no need for any lacey items. Unless to make as a gift, but I don't see that happening.

5. How often during the week do you knit/crochet and when do you normally fit in time?
I try to knit daily. I have a project in my purse at all times so when I have a few minutes to do a row I will. Most of my knitting is done at night while we all watch Wheel of Fortune.

6. What is your favorite project to date that you knitted/crocheted?
I'm really proud of my first pair of socks. I only wish I could find more of that yarn. I haven't really looked hard for more as I'm sure I could find some somewhere.

7. At this moment, what is your future dream project you would like to knit/crochet?
I really want to do the Hemlock blanket. I also have my eye on the Darling sweater for Kayla and Samantha. And of course doing color changes without knots.

8. What one new knitting/crocheting thing do you want to learn in 2008?
My original goal was Socks in '08, but now it's cables. I have tried them, but it didn't work out.

9. What are your "go to" knit/crochet book(s)?
Stitch 'N Bitch and the Knitters Bible. I would love me some Itty Bitty books.

10. Other than knitting/crocheting are there any other hobbies or activities you enjoy doing?
I like to scrapbook. I haven't done much lately. I love anything DISNEY. I am planning a trip for December '08. I also love bowling.

11. Tell us, how would your close friends/family describe you?
That I'm always looking for/and getting a fantastic 'deal'.

12. If you could have a full day to spend with anyone (dead or alive) who would that be and why?
After thinking long and hard, I had thought my Grandmother who died when I was little, but then thought of Martha Stewart.
Why? I'd like to see if actually does all the 'stuff' she claims to do in a days time.

13. What one thing do you know for sure?
I know that I will always have the love of my husband and kids, no matter how crazy I am.

14. What has our group (Charlotte Purls) changed about you?
It has made me more adventurous in my knitting. I don't think I would have tried socks if I didn't have people to 'go to' for help.
I know that I can ask any question and not feel like a total idiot and get the help I need.

15. What do you enjoy most about Charlotte Purls?
Oh I love the fellowship. There are so many helpful and knowledgeable ladies.

1. How did you hear about Charlotte Purls and when did you join?
I first heard about the Purls through Michelle's blog, but I learned more about it after attending the first Knit Nuts Meeting. Connie had such wonderful things to say about the Purls that I decided to visit. That was in November 2007.

2. How long have you been knitting/crocheting and who taught you?
I've been crocheting since 1998 and knitting since Feb. 2006. I completely taught myself crochet from books and a friend taught me how to cast on and knit stitch. I've learned most of what else I know about knitting from books (although a YouTube video helped me make the switch from English to Continental knitting without too much of a headache.)

3. What is your favorite item(s) you like to knit/crochet that you could never get enough of doing?
I enjoy knitting baby hats and novelty/toy items. The hats are quick to knit and I enjoy creating new themes; plus I donate them which feels good. The toys are fun plus I get the chance to learn different techniques while making something for my son and my nephew (or charity). These smaller projects also help me use up leftover yarn and my goal is to get rid of half of my stash of leftovers by the end of the year.

4. Is there one thing you really have no desire to knit/crochet?
I really don't feel the need to make socks, gloves or shrugs...although I'm not saying I never will. One thing I like about knitting is that there are projects for every lifestyle, budget, interest and time commitment. Right now I like quicker, portable projects geared towards little kids, but I'm sure that won't always be the case.

5. How often during the week do you knit/crochet and when do you normally fit in time?
I knit at least 5 days of the week. I take the bus to work so I knit to and from work. I also try to knit 1/2 an hour to an hour every evening, but that depends on what else I have to get done. I save finishing for the weekend when I have more time.

6. What is your favorite project to date that you knitted/crocheted?
Probably the Batman-Inspired Sweater with Detachable Cape I made for my nephew. I designed it myself (including the intarsia chart..my first), so I was really proud when it came out like I wanted, plus my nephew always wants to wear it, so it was a success. I also learned shrinky dinks can make great customized buttons.

7. At this moment, what is your future dream project you would like to knit/crochet?
I'm excited about quite a few projects (mostly things I thought up), but if I have to pick one it would be the Chanel-ish Cardigan from the Greetings from Knit Cafe book. It's more involved than any project I've chosen so far and will probably be only the second garment I've made for myself (I'm planning on casting on for the Ballet Tee from Loop-D Loop in the next week or so).

8. What one new knitting/crocheting thing do you want to learn in 2008?
I would like to learn more about color-work..I've done intarsia but would like to tackle fair isle. And I'd like to take on some more complicated patterns. Oh, and learning more about customizing for size would be great.

9. What are your "go to" knit/crochet book(s)?
I don't have a go-to book for techniques (I use the Internet for that), but I love Debbie Bliss books for the photography and classic design. I'm working my way through her book, Baby knits for Beginners, the last pattern incorporates all the previous skills learned, it's helped me to keep learning new things.

10. Other than knitting/crocheting are there any other hobbies or activities you enjoy doing?
I call myself craft chick for a good reason: I love all kinds of crafts. I knit, sew, paint, draw, etch glass, digital scrapbook, make cards, fold origami, take photographs, etc. If I see something I like I think, "I could do that," and I jump right in. I also love to read and travel.

11. Tell us, how would your close friends/family describe you?
Brutally honest, loyal, funny, inquisitive, smart and a non-wealthy Martha Stewart-type.

12. If you could have a full day to spend with anyone (dead or alive) who would that be and why?
Its a tie between Jackie O and my grandparents. Jackie O fascinates me and I never knew any of my grandparents and I would love to talk to them about who they were, what their parents were like and what my parents were like when they were younger.

13. What one thing do you know for sure?
I know a few things for sure, but the most important thing I know is that I love my son more than anything, more than myself.

14. What has our group (Charlotte Purls) changed about you?
I think it has changed others perception of knitting which has helped me not feel guilty for knitting. Seeing me in photos with a large group of people who work, have children, take care of their homes and come from varied backgrounds of different ages has helped break the stereotype that many have of what a knitter looks like. Also I don't feel funny knitting in public anymore.

15. What do you enjoy most about Charlotte Purls?
I love seeing new yarns (and touching them), seeing other projects, being inspired, great conversations, learning new things, showing my projects to others who understand the work I put into them, and the baked potatos at Bear Rock :).

Here's my Spring KAL:

And, I finally finished those Entrelac Socks! They fit much better now that I ripped the first one back to the heel and redid it.

Just FYI, I'm going to have a table at the Spring Into Arts Festival this Saturday in Concord. I'll be over by the Children's Area. I'm going to have some knitted items for sale, as well as stitch markers and some handspun yarn. Look for me if you go there!! (And keep your fingers crossed that it won't rain!!!) Wish me lots of money-making luck! :-) And I'm hoping to make it to the Purls meeting later in the day, too.

Just another bit of news - and I hesitate to post it, but I totally believe in the power of positive thoughts - my father-in-law was just diagnosed with stomach cancer last week, so if you guys could keep him and our family in your thoughts and prayers it would be much appreciated. They caught it fairly early and the cancer hasn't spread beyond his stomach, thank goodness, but he's got a long road ahead of him.

1. How did you hear about Charlotte Purls and when did you join?
I was sitting at the pool watching my neice and nephew swim when Stacey and another neighbor came to sit with me. Stacey noticed my crocheted change purse and invited me to come to the next meeting. That was last summer, July or August.

2. How long have you been knitting/crocheting and who taught you?
I have been crocheting since the 4th grade. My teacher Mrs. Klibenow kept me and a few other students at lunch and taught us how.

3. What is your favorite item(s) you like to knit/crochet that you could never get enough of doing?
I absolutely love to create handbags. I have already made quite a few and have sketched several more and of course that means buying more yarn. It's madness!!!! lol

4. Is there one thing you really have no desire to knit/crochet?
I keep looking at afghans, and then I look away. lol

5. How often during the week do you knit/crochet and when do you normally fit in time?
It varies. Every day/night if I could. Sometimes I'm crocheting at lunch. I crochet when I'm drying my hair under the hooded dryer. Most times I fit it in at bed time. It's so relaxing, I usually fall right out.

6. What is your favorite project to date that you knitted/crocheted?
My rectangled felted purse. I call it the Lynden's Signature "That's All" purse.

7. At this moment, what is your future dream project you would like to knit/crochet?
I saw a pattern to crochet sandles using twine. I started it several years ago and I haven't gotten back to it.

8. What one new knitting/crocheting thing do you want to learn in 2008?
I have been playing around with cable crochet. I would also like to learn free-form crochet and chain-free crochet.

9. What are your "go to" knit/crochet book(s)?

10. Other than knitting/crocheting are there any other hobbies or activities you enjoy doing?
I sing in two choirs, new member of a bellydance troupe, I enjoy baking and traveling. I also love going on spa trips. I grab a few gal pals and try out different spas. Usually it's someone's birthday.

Silly, outgoing, spontaneous...the event planner.

I can't say that it changed me but it added to me. It added new friends, fellowship and a way to share with others. It's an opportunity to not think about me but to share myself with others while absorbing the creativity that everyone else brings forth.

It's two solid hours that I can really get a project done while people are talking to me! YES!

1. How did you hear about Charlotte Purls and when did you join?
Through Stacey, of course! We were in bellydance class together, and she invited me.

2. How long have you been knitting/crocheting and who taught you?
I learned to crochet a chain in 5th grade, and I improvised one Christmas stocking of my own design. That was my first and last project for a long time. Some 16 years later, I took a knitting class with coworkers in 2005 at Baskets of Yarn. I got really, really obsessed. (I think I mentioned before that I knit at stoplights while driving.) I did a couple of scarf projects, but then I completely stopped. I picked everything back up when I joined the Purls last fall - all thanks to Stacey!

3. What is your favorite item(s) you like to knit/crochet that you could never get enough of doing?
Anything I can wear. I like the idea of customized, one-of-a-kind clothing and accessories without having to sew.

4. Is there one thing you really have no desire to knit/crochet?
Anything with too many color changes or intricate details - requires too much attention and commitment, blech!

5. How often during the week do you knit/crochet and when do you normally fit in time?
Depends on the mood - none to hours daily. Knitting is more of an economical therapy session rather than a hobby for me. The more frustrated I feel with life, the more I knit/crochet. It helps me feel like, "Hey, at least I'm accomplishing something in one aspect of my life."

6. What is your favorite project to date that you knitted/crocheted?
A frog zip-up hoodie I knit as a baby gift for a friend. It's my favorite because it's my first non-scarf gift that I made, and my friend raved about the gift, despite the flubs.

7. At this moment, what is your future dream project you would like to knit/crochet?
This will show what an oddball I am in the group. My future dream project involves no needlework on my part. I thought about researching a list of movies and tv shows with knitting references - I've started noticing them since I started knitting. Then, in addition to, or maybe in conjunction with this list, I thought about checking out any research of the new rise in popularity of fiber arts in the past decade, how this might correlate to the neo-feminist movement and Bust magazine, and why knitting is coming back now. I know I'm a total nerd.

8. What one new knitting/crocheting thing do you want to learn in 2008?
Obviously, it's going to be how to read a knit chart for the Hemlock Ring Blanket. I'd also like to do some knitting and crocheting with beads so I can make jewelry.

9. What are your "go to" knit/crochet book(s)?
For crochet patterns, designs, and techniques, Sasha Kagan's Crochet Inspiration. For knit patterns, Debbie Stoller's Stitch 'n' Bitch Nation. As for basic knit techniques and stitches, I haven't found one I like enough yet. Any suggestions??

10. Other than knitting/crocheting are there any other hobbies or activities you enjoy doing?
Too many!!! I like anything that's nerdy, artsy, or cultural - reading, cooking (prefer eating), debates and discussions(about politics, religion, philosophy, psychology, anthropology, science), journaling, travel, hiking and outdoorsy activities, trying new cuisines, attending plays and concerts, bellydancing, any kind of dancing (that doesn't require a partner because I suck at following the lead), aerobics and yoga, Sudoku, playing with makeup, animals, analyzing, daydreaming, organizing and planning (yes, I'm a bit anal but planning is usually part of the daydreaming), gallery crawls, drum circles, farmer's markets, trying to learn how to garden even though I kill lucky bamboo, and shopping (who doesn't love shoes???)

11. Tell us, how would your close friends/family describe you?
Well, if you asked my parents, you'd probably end up thinking I was a tattoed, pierced, smoking, drinking, potty-mouthed, rebel-without-a-cause delinquent - all because I didn't become a doctor. I've failed as an Asian, apparently. Most everyone would agree that the first thing would be "smart." I've been nerd girl my whole life if you couldn't tell from previous answers. I've been called "bubbly" by friends, or "loud" by my parents, because I appreciate a goofy sense a humor. I'm an introvert, tried and true, but in my comfort zone, I like to laugh a LOT. And everyone would give some version of how I'm the oldest sister type - gives the advice, plans the social outings for the group, plays ringleader in making mischief with the younger sibs ("Dad, I swear I did not tell Spencer that he would go bald like grandad if he didn't sleep with tape in his hair!")

12. If you could have a full day to spend with anyone (dead or alive) who would that be and why?
How about someone not yet existing? Wouldn't it be great to meet yourself 10 or 20 years older or meet one of your children 10 or 20 year later so you can learn to do everything better?

13. What one thing do you know for sure?

Off the top of my head - no matter how many hours I spend at the gym, no matter how many calories I count, my shape will always be round.But the answer I should put so I can demonstrate my "wisdom" - you can't have regrets because everything happens for a reason: a lesson to be learned, another opportunity to come, better timing to wait for...

14. What has our group (Charlotte Purls) changed about you?
It hasn't really "changed" me per se, but it definitely has been a sort of life line for me. The past year and a half has been really tough - from my sister losing most of her sight at the age of 23, having my wallet stolen, getting a tapeworm infection, and dealing with the sudden death of a grandfather figure to everything in between going wrong with work, family, relationships, and life. I must've majorly pissed off the universe somehow the year before. The Purls (and belly dance class and the gym) have kept me from just crawling into a hole and shutting everything and everyone out. The Purls give me something to look forward to every other Saturday.

15. What do you enjoy most about Charlotte Purls?

It allows a different sort of artistic outlet for me, and I love watching creativity in progress and seeing how other people are "expressing" themselves. Plus, I learn something new all the time.

1. How did you hear about Charlotte Purls and when did you join?
I met Stacey at Charlotte Yarn. She was very friendly and invited me personally. I had been looking for a great group to join, and from my first visit it was a perfect fit. Everyone was so friendly and positive, totally different than my first experience with a knitting group – ie. more of the SnB variety. More B than S sometimes!

2. How long have you been knitting/crocheting and who taught you?
Crocheting forever – my mom taught me when I was very young. I’ve been knitting since 2005 when my son was in the hospital for surgery. I needed something to keep my hands busy – and have been a knitter ever since.

3. What is your favorite item(s) you like to knit/crochet that you could never get enough of doing?
Socks and shawls

4. Is there one thing you really have no desire to knit/crochet?
Skirts

5. How often during the week do you knit/crochet and when do you normally fit in time?
As much as I can – I work at home and am lucky to be able to knit when I’m on the phone in meetings. Keeps me focused and off email!

6. What is your favorite project to date that you knitted/crocheted?
Probably my circle vest – I love the yarn, colors and it was a fun project. Hmmmm – the color work tam and/or swallow tail is also close to the top.

7. At this moment, what is your future dream project you would like to knit/crochet?
One of the Victorian Lace Today projects – I can gaze at that book forever. They are so beautiful.

Any stitch dictionary – I have many, Barbara Walker’s my favorites probably. I love to just find a beautiful pattern and envision it in something totally unique. I also love all of EZs books, endless, endless inspiration. If I had no other books, I would have hers and would never be bored.

10. Other than knitting/crocheting are there any other hobbies or activities you enjoy doing?
Well, if you check my blog http://craftygirlz.blogspot.com (shameless plug) you will see our family has just started doing jigsaw puzzles as a family hobby. It’s only been a week – but we are almost done with a 600+ pieces puzzle!!!!! And it is working, the kids and even hubby are getting sucked in as it starts to come into focus. I’ve been looking for a while for something we can do as a family – and even incorporate visitors to our home in for a few minutes. We like games in general – or maybe I like games and just push it on my family! I like things I can do with others – since at times my knitting is so solitary (and I need that too!)

11. Tell us, how would your close friends/family describe you?
Overcommitted, independent and stubborn – I have a few things to work on. J But also determined, loving, and a bit scatter-brained.

12. If you could have a full day to spend with anyone (dead or alive) who would that be and why?
Jesus – although I try to spend time with Him every day. I just think I would see the world with such totally different eyes than I do today. That’s enough of my preaching for one day!

13. What one thing do you know for sure?
I am loved and awesomely blessed.

14. What has our group (Charlotte Purls) changed about you?
A little more willing to carve out some “me” time.

15. What do you enjoy most about Charlotte Purls?
All the great Charlotte Purls – of course. I’ve met so many great people – I’ve enjoyed getting know everyone and looking forward to meeting even more. It’s so great to get out of my standard “social” circle – and meet people across the region and in so many interesting professions and backgrounds.

Pi is done! Yes - Pi wasn't one of the original KAL projects, but some of us asked for it to be added and Stacy graciously let us. I was so into Pi - that poor Hemlock was set aside. Now I need to get back to him.

But today Pi celebration day!!!! It was a totally fun project - anyone thinking about it - do it!!

Amigurumi Cuteness

I came across a neat book at the Library, Amigurumi World, Seriously Cute Crochet, written by Ana Paula Rimoli. And cute they are. Amigurumi is the japanese word for knitted or crocheted stuffed animal. Although, this book includes cupcakes, eggs and plants. Ana Paula also has a blog and Etsy Store.

I'm totally hooked...Actually I'm improving my crochet skills working on the little creatures. They are very quick to make and will look good in any room in your house. I guarantee it. Even Connie has ordered an Amigurumi book. She has trouble saying that word :-).

1. How did you hear about Charlotte Purls and when did you join?
I heard about the group on Ravelry (woo!) and came to my first meeting last fall--maybe in September??

2. How long have you been knitting/crocheting and who taught you?
I first learned to knit when I was 5 or 6, but I really started getting serious about ten years ago. My grandmother taught me the basics, and then I picked up the rest from books (with help from my mom). I learned to crochet from a woman I met at an LYS in San Francisco about six years ago, but I'm still not very good.

3. What is your favorite item(s) you like to knit/crochet that you could never get enough of doing?
I love making baby clothes--so little, so cute, and so fast to make! I let my friends provide the babies, though.

4. Is there one thing you really have no desire to knit/crochet?
Heh--I have the worst Startitis of anyone I know, so anything I say here I'll end up wanting to knit in a few days. I'll say that I'm not that interested in knitting dresses or skirts, but I reserve the right to cast one on tomorrow. :)

5. How often during the week do you knit/crochet and when do you normally fit in time?
I usually knit in the evenings, while watching TV or reading. If I have a project I really need to finish, I'll bring it to work and knit at lunch. I used to knit on the bus, but I can't stand spending almost two hours (each way!) to commute any more.

6. What is your favorite project to date that you knitted/crocheted?
Maybe the Hemlock Ring blanket? Because it was a little challenging for me, but not at all hard once I got started, and I loved the final result.

7. At this moment, what is your future dream project you would like to knit/crochet?
I'd love to make a Clapotis out of the original yarn (Lorna's Laces Lion & Lamb) but I just can't bring myself to spend the $$.

8. What one new knitting/crocheting thing do you want to learn in 2008?
How to make something non-rectangular on my knitting machine.

9. What are your "go to" knit/crochet book(s)?
I use Ann Budd's Handy Book of Patterns all the time for basic proportions.

10. Other than knitting/crocheting are there any other hobbies or activities you enjoy doing?
I love to read. I used to sew and embroider, but knitting has taken up most of my crafting time.

11. Tell us, how would your close friends/family describe you?
A very good teammate in Trivial Pursuit.

12. If you could have a full day to spend with anyone (dead or alive) who would that be and why?
My grandparents--I don't get to see my grandmother as often as I'd like, and my grandfather passed away seven years ago and I miss him.

Ok, this question is much too tempting for a philosophy major!

I love having a group of people who share my love of crafty things--knitting was always relatively solitary for me before this.

So this is the first pair of "real" socks I've made for myself. Basically, I just really love making socks, but I started making them for other people after I finished that first pair using acrylic worsted.

I had bought a second hank of "Rauen" mediumweight from Blue Moon Fiber Arts because I was afraid I'd run out of the one hank I bought for Chris's socks. However, I only needed the first hank for his socks, so I decided that even though it wasn't the color I'd have chosen, I'd go ahead, wind the second hank (with the new swift and nostepinne that Chris made me!), and make a pair for myself. I further decided that I would make ankle socks...well, just right above the ankle really. That's my favorite height for socks.

I think they turned out really well. I'm now starting on another pair of ankle socks, this time ribbed, with the Regia yarn Stacey gave me from her stash. I'll get back to doing socks for other people too, of course. I have to frog my son's sock because it turned out too small, but he'll get them eventually.

1. How did you hear about Charlotte Purls and when did you join?
I'm yet another person who heard about the Purls from Ravelry. I believe I started attending around September 2007, but I am not exactly sure.

2. How long have you been knitting/crocheting and who taught you?
I've been knitting since 2003, if I remember correctly. I taught myself, by printing out written instructions from some yarn company's website. This is probably why I do some things a little bit oddly. The first thing I ever knit was a scarf, and I didn't know that I was supposed to turn my work (they left that out of the instructions), so I just knit back and forth, right to left and then left to right, without ever turning it over. I was so relieved when I found out that it is not supposed to be that hard! Soon after, I discovered http://www.knittinghelp.com/, which was the biggest help ever in terms of learning how to read patterns and how to do various stitches.

3. What is your favorite item(s) you like to knit/crochet that you could never get enough of doing?
I really love knitting with two colors, especially designing my own patterns. Hats are my favorite for colorwork, because they provide quick gratification, they are satisfying to knit, and you end up with a useful finished product.

4. Is there one thing you really have no desire to knit/crochet?
I have a pair of socks sitting here that I started about 4 years ago and never finished. I have no desire to finish that pair of socks. They are my secret shame.

5. How often during the week do you knit/crochet and when do you normally fit in time?
It depends. Most of the time, I knit for a little while almost every night, because it helps me wind down to go to bed. Lately I've been working on things other than knitting in the evenings, but in the last week or so I've gotten back to my old knitting schedule. I generally knit while I'm watching tv or something.

6. What is your favorite project to date that you knitted/crocheted?
I have several favorites, but the projects I've worn the most often this winter are the fingerless mitts from our knitalong and a scarf I made a couple of years ago.

7. At this moment, what is your future dream project you would like to knit/crochet?
I dream of knitting an intricately cabled fisherman's sweater. If I ever actually do it I will feel like I've become a "real" knitter.

8. What one new knitting/crocheting thing do you want to learn in 2008?
If you had asked me this two months ago I would have said cables. But recently I've been working on the gathered pullover, which has a cable, and now I feel stupid for not doing them before. So now I guess my answer is that I would like to continue practicing cables.

9. What are your "go to" knit/crochet book(s)?
The Barbara Walker books. I love to look through her stitch patterns and put together my own combinations, especially for scarves and shawls.

10. Other than knitting/crocheting are there any other hobbies or activities you enjoy doing?
Spinning, dyeing yarn, fiber, and silk, making jewelry, bellydancing, going to the dog park, gardening, and lately I've been trying to learn to sew.

11. Tell us, how would your close friends/family describe you?
I am scared to ask them.

12. If you could have a full day to spend with anyone (dead or alive) who would that be and why?
Dead: I can't decide, because I have two friends, two grandparents, and two pets who have died in the past few years who I would give anything to spend a day with.

Alive: Barack Obama.

13. What one thing do you know for sure?
That there's a lot I do not know.

14. What has our group (Charlotte Purls) changed about you?
I just moved to Charlotte recently, and the Charlotte Purls have given me an opportunity to meet people and spend time around a great group of women. Stacey also recommended bellydancing, which has also been a wonderful way to meet people and a lot of fun, too. So basically I went from spending the last year in Concord doing nothing and knowing no one outside of work, to having such a full social schedule that I sometimes have to choose one activity over the other! I am very grateful for that, because I'm a much happier person because of it.

15. What do you enjoy most about Charlotte Purls?

Hemlock in Progress

I won't make it to the field trip this weekend - Colin and I are celebrating 13 years! And we get a couple of days with no kids - so we are skipping town.

For those of you who are thinking about the Hemlock - join in!! It's not that hard and now is the time with so many who can join you over the next two months. I'm having a lot of fun with it and have already decided while a Huge Granny Square is my favorite baby blanket of last resort, this will be my baby present when I have a bit more time to plan. I would have loved one of these for my 1st born.

1. How did you hear about Charlotte Purls and when did you join?
I dont even remember where I found Stacey's email address originally, but Im glad I did!! I do know she was PATIENT with me while I was moving and settling in and working crazy hours before I was able to FINALLY make my 1st meeting - about 6 months ago maybe?

2. How long have you been knitting/crocheting and who taught you?
My Gram taught me when I was way young, but it didn't stick much beyond some doll blankets and lopsided squares. Then right after my mom passed away in 2004, I was gripped by a NEED to knit - I guess I needed an outlet and knew instinctively knitting was the way to go!

3. What is your favorite item(s) you like to knit/crochet that you could never get enough of doing?
I love socks! I also find myself circling back to the basics like felted bags when I'm in need of a "comfort knit'. And baby items since they are small, portable, adorable fast knits. And....

4. Is there one thing you really have no desire to knit/crochet?
toilet paper cozies?

5. How often during the week do you knit/crochet and when do you normally fit in time?
Whenever I can! Some weeks are better than others, but I try not to let too much time go between picking up the needles for a fix.

6. What is your favorite project to date that you knitted/crocheted?
I made a vintage bubble bag as a swap gift - came out exactly the way I wanted it to. Havent been able to replicate it yet. I also love the Peace Fleece vest I made my dad for fathers day the 1st year I was knitting.

7. At this moment, what is your future dream project you would like to knit/crochet?
Whatever I tell you now will change in 10 minutes anyway ;-) I want to keep learning new techiques and better ways to do old ones, so I guess my answer has to be whatever will keep me growing and improving as a knitter.

8. What one new knitting/crocheting thing do you want to learn in 2008?
Way more than one, but as I type this, I am less than a week away from a double knitting class with Aimee and a Fair Isle class with Jane - YAY!!!

9. What are your "go to" knit/crochet book(s)?
I love my book collection but to be honest when I am having trouble with something or need some inpsiration, I will look to Ravelry or other online sources, then my books. And of course, ANYTHING by EZ ;-)

10. Other than knitting/crocheting are there any other hobbies or activities you enjoy doing?
I love to read, to cook, and as geeky as this sounds, I really enjoy web design (when its for pleasure, not work). I want to learn to sew, eventually too. And spin. And weave! (and win the lottery so I can persue all these hobbies!!)

11. Tell us, how would your close friends/family describe you?
I've been told I am honest (sometimes painfully so), loving, loyal to a fault, and nurturing. I pay them well to say nice things ;-) (Thank you for not asking me to describe myself!)

12. If you could have a full day to spend with anyone (dead or alive) who would that be and why?
Only one? There are so many people, both living and passed that I would love to spend a day with. So much history, so many different perspectives! This question has been gnawing at me since I saw the 1st Purl profile, and I'm sorry to say I have to pass this one as my list is way too long

13. What one thing do you know for sure?
Life is too short and is full of unexpected twists, so living every minute, and letting the people who matter know it need to be high priority.

14. What has our group (Charlotte Purls) changed about you?
My life has certainly been enriched by the friendships that have blossomed!

15. What do you enjoy most about Charlotte Purls?
Being with people who "get" me, who understand my fibery loves, knowing that while we come from different life experiences, we still have created a wonderful circle of friends.

Socks, Fetchings, and more Socks

Hi all! I thought I'd share with you what I've finished recently - and show you some of my new stash!

Here are some socks I made for my 4yo son (he outgrew some I made him just a few months ago! I can't believe how fast he's growing!):

These are my own design based on Cat Bordhi's Sky Architecture in 'New Pathways for Sock Knitters'.

And a pair of Entrelac Socks (Interweave Knits Spring 2007):

These are in Seacoast Handpainted Superwash Sock in Desert Rose with some KP Gloss for the toes (and heels). I am *so* loving entrelac - this is my first. They're also my first toe-ups!

Oh, and look at these purty sock yarns!

The one on the left is Audacity by Black Bunny Fibers, and the one on the right is Yes We Can by MamaE CEyeBer Fibers. I especially love the Audacity because of the idea behind it - it's supposed to represent the many skintones of humanity. :-) (And the proceeds from both of these went to Obama's campaign, but that's beside the point. :-))

Oh, and I wrote up the pattern for my Mardi Gras Mask - I have it up on my blog for free. :-)

1. How did you hear about Charlotte Purls and when did you join?
Back in December of 2006 I wanted to start a new hobby and decided on Knitting. At that time I did not know any other knitters to help or show me how to even start. The wonderful world of the internet was my first teacher. After several weeks I decided that I needed some one on one assistance and found that the local Michael’s in my area offer classes for $15. (Paying $15 got really old really quick.) I started looking for knitting clubs online and found a website called meetups.com. While I was searching for local clubs and meet ups I ran across Stacey’s profile. Other clubs I found were too far and was not convenient but the Charlotte Purls was perfect due to the location. I emailed Stacey and asked if they were excepting new members and she welcomed me with open arms. I have been a member of Charlotte Purls since March of 2007.

2. How long have you been knitting/crocheting and who taught you?
My knitting birthday is December 2006. A little over a year now.

3. What is your favorite item(s) you like to knit/crochet that you could never get enough of doing?
My favorite items to knit are bags and anything that have a level of beginner.

4. Is there one thing you really have no desire to knit/crochet?
Can’t say there is anything that I have no desire to learn.

5. How often during the week do you knit/crochet and when do you normally fit in time?
I try to squeeze in knitting about 2 to 3 times a week. Mostly on the weekend.

6. What is your favorite project to date that you knitted/crocheted?
My favorite project so far to date would be Kaino. Kaino is long cardigan vest that took me forever to finish.

7. At this moment, what is your future dream project you would like to knit/crochet?
My future dream project is to learn how to knit socks. Have the yarn just haven’t started.

8. What one new knitting/crocheting thing do you want to learn in 2008?
Socks and a little lace.

9. What are your "go to" knit/crochet book(s)?
Knitting for Dummies

Going to the movies and going out to eat with my friends

If I could have a full day to spend with anyone I would say Oprah. She seems to be full of knowledge and wisdom. Oprah is one of my role models that I would love to one day to be able to meet her.

The one thing I know for sure is think positive and positive things will come to you. I am a believer of you are what you think.

14. What has our group (Charlotte Purls) changed about you?
I do not think the group has changed me, but it has broadened my group of friends. I enjoy seeing and talking to each person in the group.

15. What do you enjoy most about Charlotte Purls?
What I enjoy most about Charlotte Purls is getting together with my fellow knitters. Everyone in the group give me new ideas on what I can possible knit and what I can do with a little more practice. I look forward to each meeting even if I do not get much knitting done.

Saturday Feb, 23rd - The Purls Make Stitchmarkers!

Hi y'all. Cristi here. Stacey has asked me to post here and let you know what all stuff you could bring next week that will be useful to learn how to make your very own stitchmarkers.

1) The Tools

Left to right that's a wire cutter, crimper and round tipped pliers. You can find these sold in set with a beading tool kit for less than $10 at Michaels. Use your 40% coupon published in today's paper and get it even cheaper!

2) The notions

Jump rings (of an appropriate size for the needles you work with most), head pins and eye pins. I prefer using head pins, but if all you can find is the eye pins those will work too. But they do increase the snagability (yes it's a word) of your completed markers.

3) Beads!

Seed beads for accents and any other beads that you find and like. The seed beads will also help prevent beads with larger holes from falling off your head pins.

That's about it! If you have a piece of felt or something to work on so the beads don't go rolling everywhere, that will be helpful too.

I took advantage of the 50% off coupon at AC Moore and purchased two new books, one on Saturday and the second one on Sunday. They have quite a nice selection so I had a hard time making up my mind. Super Stitches Knitting includes more than 300 stitch patterns (Knit and purl, vertical motifs, ribbing, borders, texture stitches, cables, eyelet, lace and color knitting, edgings, etc...etc...

The Finishing Techniques is an excellent source which contains more than 50 expert techniques with easy to follow illustrations.

Take a look at my new basket. They have them at the Dillworth Coffee House in Mint Hill. It offers quite a bit more room than my Longaberger basket.

1. How did you hear about Charlotte Purls and when did you join?

I'm not sure how long ago it was but I'd guess it was sometime in late July-August. I happened into Caribou to get an afternoon drink and saw everyone there and decided to join in the following meeting.

2. How long have you been knitting/crocheting and who taught you?

I taught myself after getting a crash course at a knit shop in all of 20 minutes. I wanted to learn so that I could make my sister a baby blanket. I finished it before she was born and she still uses it to date (she is now 12!).

3. What is your favorite item(s) you like to knit/crochet that you could never get enough of doing?

I don't have a favorite. If I work on something, it takes me forever so they're all my favorites! I'm thrilled that I got finished.

4. Is there one thing you really have no desire to knit/crochet?

Can't think of anything. I'd try it all if I only had more time.

5. How often during the week do you knit/crochet and when do you normally fit in time?

I usually knit every two weeks at the CP meetings.I knit at night once in a while if I haven't fallen asleep on the couch first!

6. What is your favorite project to date that you knitted/crocheted?

Proud of that first blanket I made for my niece. The last time I saw it I said, "wow, that is so pretty, where did you get it?"

7. At this moment, what is your future dream project you would like to knit/crochet?

Socks. I bought 2 types of yarn and can't wait to get started but first I have too many other things lined up.

8. What one new knitting/crocheting thing do you want to learn in 2008?

I'd love to do something with cables....I know ....boring to some of you but would like to see it with my own 2 hands.

Love cycling class, going to the gym, playing with my kiddos, reading, dancing.

It's been challenging after moving here and having 2 small children to get to know others but this lets me get out for a while. It's MY time and I feel good about that.

1. How did you hear about Charlotte Purls and when did you join?
Sometime around January or February 2007 I decided to really kick-up my knitting. So I started looking for knitting groups in the area. I stumbled upon Meetup.com and discovered there were as a Charlotte Knitting Group. I saw Stacey's profile and was interested in the Charlotte Purls group and she emailed me back....and what do you know.....We already knew each other! It was so great to reconnect with Stacey via email and at my first meeting sometime in March. I've been hooked on Charlotte Purls every since.

2. How long have you been knitting/crocheting and who taught you?
I've been knitting for about 2.5 years. I taught myself from a knit kit and knittinghelp.com.

3. What is your favorite item(s) you like to knit/crochet that you could never get enough of doing?
When I first started knitting, I could not get enough of scarves. Everyone in my family had a scarf crafted by me! But as I am maturing in my craft I'm really enjoying short projects that are garments....like "Passin' the Dress Code" by Stitch Poet. I love the fact that it was a quick project plus it has cables. I really try to complete short projects so I can keep my "KnitEsteem" up! Hopefully this year I will start my challenging projects!!!

4. Is there one thing you really have no desire to knit/crochet?
SOCKS.....I love to see the great socks everyone has made and wearing, but the Sock Bug has not hit me yet. However, I do want to try a pair.....we'll see! Also...LACE Shawls! I do not think I have enough patience for it.

5. How often during the week do you knit/crochet and when do you normally fit in time?
Maybe once or twice a week. With me being in school its hard to find the time to knit. Occassionally I try to squeeze in a few minutes during my lunch break as my "get away" from my work.

6. What is your favorite project to date that you knitted/crocheted?
"Passin' the Dress Code" by Stitch Poet, & Embossed Heart Baby Blanket

7. At this moment, what is your future dream project you would like to knit/crochet?
Lizard Ridge.....I think its a beautiful heirloom piece!

8. What one new knitting/crocheting thing do you want to learn in 2008?
Socks, Fair Isle, and Knitting Backwards

9. What are your "go to" knit/crochet book(s)?
Knitting Rules, One Skein, Fitted Knits

10. Other than knitting/crocheting are there any other hobbies or activities you enjoy doing?
Reading, Watching Movies, Bowling

11. Tell us, how would your close friends/family describe you?

12. If you could have a full day to spend with anyone (dead or alive) who would that be and why?
I've been asked this questions many times and my answer changes depending on what I'm reading or what stage I'm in of life. Currently, I would like to spend a day with Sidney Poitier. I'm reading his autobiography "The Measure of a Man" and there are so many things I'm reading that resonates with me and I would love the opportunity to spend time with him and glean more wisdom from the things he has experienced in his life time.

13. What one thing do you know for sure?
The power to live your life with true joy, peace, and success is within each of us. Its our inner will to have these things that will propel us to live everyday with purpose. God has equiped each of us with gifts and talents that we must use to leave a legacy on this earth.

14. What has our group (Charlotte Purls) changed about you?
Charlotte Purls really hasn't changed much about me, it really is a great place for me to be who I am and have freedom in my craft.

15. What do you enjoy most about Charlotte Purls?
So far our KAL have been fun! I really look forward to them. They keep me knitting on a regular basis. Also, the bond we have within Charlotte Purls is incredible and its truly a blessing to share this craft with such women that really care and have a passion for life. There is not a group of women I would rather sip coffee and click my needles with on a Saturday afternoon...Love you All!!!

First off, I just wanted to say that I was sorry to read about your loss Stacie. Second, I've really enjoyed reading about my fellow Purls. Third, I've got some finished projects. 1. How did you hear about Charlotte Purls and when did you join?

I was there at the beginning when Stacey Fran and I met at A. C. Moore. and decided to meet on a regular basis.

2. How long have you been knitting/crocheting and who taught you?

I began knitting around September 2006.

3. What is your favorite item(s) you like to knit/crochet that you could never get enough of doing?

The old fall back is the scarf... there are so many ways to make them.

4. Is there one thing you really have no desire to knit/crochet?
A thong. ; - }

5. How often during the week do you knit/crochet and when do you normally fit in time?

I usually knit on the weekends and late evenings before bed or while watching t.v.

6. What is your favorite project to date that you knitted/crocheted?

Probably the shrug and the baby blanket.

7. At this moment, what is your future dream project you would like to knit/crochet?

Fishnet laceup stockings if I can find a plus size pattern as well as some belly dance wear.

8. What one new knitting/crocheting thing do you want to learn in 2008?

Maybe felting or some lace work. I would like to learn to crochet as well.

9. What are your "go to" knit/crochet book(s)?

Knitty Gritty Knits, and Big Girl Knits. I know it's not a book but I love the knitty.com and knitting pattern central websites.

10. Other than knitting/crocheting are there any other hobbies or activities you enjoy doing?

Belly dancing, and cooking.

11. Tell us, how would your close friends/family describe you?

Speshule!!(Say it the way it's spelled.) LOL. Really I think they would describe me as, smart, funny, silly in a good way, loving and nurturing.

12. If you could have a full day to spend with anyone (dead or alive) who would that be and why?

My dad. I miss him.

13. What one thing do you know for sure?

That I will never know everything! (And that's okay!)

I get out more and am getting more comfortable in larger groups.

Getting time to relax and spend time with my friends whether I'm knitting or not.

Sit & Knit!

We had a nice time last night at our 2nd 'Sit & Knit' on our alternate Tuesdays!

We got to meet some new Purls and by chance we knitted/crocheted a bit in between the great conversation :oD

Clogs Knit Along

I've thoroughly enjoyed knitting the Fiber Trends clogs. I started mine a couple of weeks or so ago and knitted along with Connie. Thanks Connie for all your help especially picking up the stitches and joining the two soles together. I also learned something new while making the cuff.

Using the Cascade Bulky yarn worked great and these definitely knit fast. I have been home sick with a cold. I completed one entire clog minus one of the soles in a few hours. I'm looking forward making more to give as gifts.

We learned that it takes more yarn to make the soles and cuff. I bought extra hot pink so I'll be making another set of pinks.

1. How did you hear about Charlotte Purls and when did you join?
I heard about the CP's via Stacey. She had commented on my blog and then we im'd via Yahoo. In talking she had told me she was having to learn crochet for her Lizard Ridge. I offered to help her and asked her to come over to my house. She said that she couldn't that day as it was a CP meeting day. I asked her if anyone could come and she said yes, and told me how to get there. This was my first visit and it was in late April or early May 2007.

2. How long have you been knitting/crocheting and who taught you?
I have been crocheting since I was a teenager, but didn't make my first project until I was a young adult. My mother taught me and my first crochet project was a ripple afghan, which I still have.
I taught myself to knit this past February 2007 via the http://www.knittinghelp.com/ video's.

3. What is your favorite item(s) you like to knit/crochet that you could never get enough of doing?
Well, I hate to say it, but dishcloth's! It seems that I am always crocheting or knitting one on a regular basis. They go quick, and are a great way to try new stitches and they make great gifts.

4. Is there one thing you really have no desire to knit/crochet?
Umm.. well, I really have no desire to knit socks. I have knit them using a sock loom, but I just don't get the whole sock knitting craze. But, that is just me and I know that a lot of people love to knit socks. I won't say never, as I do have a DVD that teaches how to knit two at the same time, which I would have to do, because once I finished the first, I may never finish the second.

5. How often during the week do you knit/crochet and when do you normally fit in time?
The question should be when do I find time to fit in other activities? I knit daily! I always have a project in a basket beside where I sit at the TV. I pick it up first thing in the morning and depending on what project I am working on, I may knit or crochet all day. I always knit or crochet watching evening TV or anytime I am in front of the TV. I also turn the TV to the music station and just relax, listen and knit. In fact, it's a great time to listen to my favorite knitting podcast. My favorite time to knit is the afternoon. My husband and son are at work and the house is quiet and peaceful.

I am blessed that I get to stay home, and I do work, but only for a few hours on Tuesday and Wednesday in my home salon. Which leaves me plenty of time for my favorite past time!

6. What is your favorite project to date that you knitted/crocheted?
The lace shawl that I knitted for my daughter this past Christmas. It was my first lace project and although there were mistakes made, I was overall thrilled with the way it turned out.

7. At this moment, what is your future dream project you would like to knit/crochet?
I would love to knit myself a car coat length sweater. It will take tons of yarn and tons of time, so not sure when I will take this project on, but if the perfect pattern makes itself known to me, I just may start it this year.

8. What one new knitting/crocheting thing do you want to learn in 2008?
The mobius cast on and delve further into fair isle. I just finished my first beginner's fair isle project, a tam, and now I think I am hooked.

9. What are your "go to" knit/crochet book(s)?
It would be hard to pick just one. I do have this one by Michaels that has many great projects, and I love the Alterknits, Weekend Knitting and the one called Mason Dixon Knitting. But, if I have to choose my fav go to, it would be Reader's Digest Complete Guide to Needlework. This is a very old book and I have had it for years (it was my mom's) and this past December I gave it back to my mom and got my own copy via EBay. The newer version had a different cover, but I wanted to old cover and you can find them cheap on EBay. It has a wealth of information on anything and great photo's as well.

10. Other than knitting/crocheting are there any other hobbies or activities you enjoy doing?
Yes, I cross stitch, sew, smock, dabble in ceramics and of course making stitch markers and row counters.

11. Tell us, how would your close friends/family describe you?
Funny, crazy, outgoing and fun to be around. Really! LOL

12. If you could have a full day to spend with anyone (dead or alive) who would that be and why?
Both of my grandma's. To ask them all the things about their lives that I never got to ask them.

13. What one thing do you know for sure?
That I am saved by grace and that when I die I will spend eternity in heaven with the Lord. Hallelujah!

14. What has our group (Charlotte Purls) changed about you?
I don't think CP has changed me in anyway, but it has enriched my life. I have learned so much by going to the meetings and meeting new friends and being inspired by everyone's projects.

15. What do you enjoy most about Charlotte Purls?
The love, fun, laughter, diversity, the come as you are, fully accepting nature of our group!

One sock down another to knit

I'm having fun knitting these socks. (My first pair) I just wish I had more time to knit them. It's self stripping yarn, I might frog the second one to 'match' the first one. Yeah I'm OCD that way.

Not sure why it makes my leg and foot look fat. Oh well. Now when I'm done I need to figure out what to wear them with.

I finished my KAL clogs, and have even started on the pair the man requested.

No, really - see?

Pre felting, I thought mine were big - but they sized down perfectly!

All thoughts of mine being big went out the window when I finished his 1st clog!
This thing is HUGE! 15 inches long!!

I got a tiny bit sidetracked between Trinity's recent mobility issues and a fun Hat for Alex, but plan to return to the 2nd clog tonight after work.

Behold my first sock! I made this sock in worsted weight yarn on size 6 DPNs, because that's what I had lying around (Stacey gave me some sock yarn, but 6 was the smallest DPN size I had). I figured I'd make my first pair on cheap synthetic yarn in case I screwed up, and then use the Lamb's Pride I got from Janet's stash to make a couple of pairs for my daughters (the yarn I got from Janet is close in color to the yarn I used for the two pairs of Fetchings I made, which I'm also giving my daughters). By then I should be able to run out and get some smaller DPNs and dive into other sock patterns.

I think for my very first sock this came out pretty well. I have to fly to Vegas tomorrow for a few days, so I'll knit the second one on the plane.

Big Foot!

I must admit, when I started working on these felted clogs I was alittle bit frustrated. I had to rip the sole out 3 times!! After some consultation with Stacey and Wendy, I finally got off on the right foot....and a BIG one I might add! My first felted clog is complete and I hope to finish the second this weekend! If you haven't cast-on yet....What are you waiting for?! See you all soon!

Stacey said that I should post this here (it's already in my own blog). Over the New Year holiday I finally got done with the Fetchings that I started (both pairs). They're lovely and delightful and I am sending them off to my cute daughters.

I wasn't going to participate in the felted clog KAL, but now that I picked up some Lamb's Pride worsted from Janet's stash giveaway, I might do so after all. Dunno if I'll finish them before the "deadline", but hey. The yarn I got from Janet is pretty close in colorway to the yarn I used for the Fetchings, so if I do the KAL, I'll make two pairs of those also and send 'em to my girls along with the gloves. Whatever. :D
